The beauty of the Carpathian Mountains
The most important mountains in Central and Eastern Europe, the Carpathian Mountains are the longest in Europe after the Scandinavian Mountains and most of them are in Romania. Due to their presence here, the country receives many tourists annually looking to admire the beauty of nature, as in Romania is the largest surface with virgin forests from Europe, the flora and fauna, relax in a spa resort, getting treatments with thermal and mineral waters.
Other nice activities that you can practice are skiing, alpinism, and of course, take a wild ride on highest road from Romania and from the Carpathians: Transalpina and Transfagarasan, the most beautiful road in the world. No wonder the guys from Top Gear filmed one of their shows here.
On Transalpina you get up to 2145 meters and was built by the roman armies on their way to Sarmisegetusa, thousands of years ago. Nowadays this road is completely renovated and ready to be used by car lovers.
Regarding Transfagarasan, you get up to 2042 meters and the view takes your breath away. Because of the bad weather the road is open only a few months each year from July until October, and the major tourist attractions are the Lake and the dam Vidraru, Cetatea Poenari, very old and Balea Lake with the waterfall from Balea as well. Here you can see the ice hotel, the first one from the East Europe.
Besides Romania other countries have the pleasure to offer their tourists views of these mountains, such as Czech Republic where they begin, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine and Serbia. The most important cities near these mountains are Bratislava and Kosice from Slovakia, Krakow in Poland, Miskolc in Hungary and Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu and Brasov in Romania.
